Spinal Tumor Medical Illustration

This is an illustration that I was asked to do that shows the removal of a tumor attached to the vertebrae. The procedure involves removal of part of the vertebrae along with the tumor.  This is showing the beginning of that process.

Medical Illustration

I inherited this project from one of our other illustrations that had passed away.  So some of the initial concepts were begun. This one was pretty complicated for me to figure out.  The head shape wasn't too much of a problem but it was getting the anatomy correct for a portion of the skin and muscle removed from the chin and flipped and stitched near the ear.  There was no real illustrative reference and I had to go with some extremely gruesome surgery photographs. There were a number of revisions on this one as the client had to correct some of my assumptions and interruptions.
